The Department of Chemical Sciences award both B.Sc (Hons) degrees in Biochemistry and Chemistry and the programs are fully accredited by National Universities Commission (NUC). Biochemistry is the branch of science that deals with the chemical processes that occur within living organisms. It is a broad field with diverse applications, ranging from drug discovery and development to food science, and agriculture. Biochemists are in high demand all over the world, with numerous job opportunities available in various industries and academic-centric facilities.

Why should you study Biochemistry in AJU?

In AJU, Biochemistry undergraduates are given practical exposure to hands-on laboratory training on routine laboratory analysis, quality control and product(s) analysis, medicinal plants researches etc. that helps to prepare and equip our undergraduates adequately for their career development in Biochemistry.

They are encouraged to acquire professional skills such as certification/licensing from organizations like Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technologist, Nigerian Society of Biochemist and Molecular Biologist, Institute of Public Analyst of Nigeria, Industrial Health and Safety etc.

What are the job opportunities after graduation?

Biochemistry graduates may choose careers in breweries; agricultural, industrial, and medical research institutes; oil companies; hospitals; pharmaceutical companies; educational institutions (as lecturers in Universities and Colleges). Other fields of interest to biochemists include forensic science, bioinformatics and cheminformatics, biomedical sciences, biotechnology and Molecular biology, and environmental sciences with research interest in pollution management and bioremediation.
